Oscillation Flow Dam Operation Method for Algal Bloom Mitigation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Green algae play an important role in ecosystems as primary producers, but they can cause algal blooms, which are socio-environmental burdens responding to them requires water resources from dam reservoirs. This study proposes alternative for reducing blooms through operation without using additional resources. A novel oscillation flow concept was suggested: oscillating discharge of irregular flow. To examine its effect, the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code—National Institute Environment Research (EFDC-NIER) model constructed and calibrated Namhan River, South Korea, downstream Chungju Dam Gangcheon Weir. The quality area were simulated analyzed August 2019, is when largest number harmful cyanobacteria had been reported recent years. Our results showed that produced significant variance velocity, bloom density River reduced by 20–30% Dam. However, further investigation required before practical application.

Prediction of Algal Bloom Using Genetic Programming

In this study an attempt is made to mathematically model and predict algal blooms in Tolo Harbour (Hong Kong) using Genetic Programming (GP). Chlorophyll plays a vital role and is taken as a measure of algal bloom biomass and 8 other variables are taken as input for its prediction. It is observed that GP evolves multiple models with almost same values of errors – of – measure. Previous studies ...

SeaWiFS discrimination of harmful algal bloom evolution

The discrimination of harmful algal blooms (HABs) from space would benefit both the capability of early warning systems and the study of environmental factors affecting the initiation of blooms. Unfortunately, there are no published techniques using global monitoring satellite sensors to distinguish the resulting subtle changes in ocean colour, so in situ sampling is needed to identify the spec...

Bayesian model averaging for harmful algal bloom prediction.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a worldwide problem that have been increasing in frequency and extent over the past several decades. HABs severely damage aquatic ecosystems by destroying benthic habitat, reducing invertebrate and fish populations, and affecting larger species such as dugong that rely on seagrasses for food. Few statistical models for predicting HAB occurrences have been develop...

Modified local sands for the mitigation of harmful algal blooms.

A new method was developed for marine harmful algal bloom (HAB) mitigation using local beach sand or silica sand modified with chitosan and polyaluminum chloride (PAC). Untreated sand was ineffective in flocculating algal cells, but 80% removal efficiency was achieved for Amphidinium carterae Hulburt and a Chlorella sp. in 3 min (t80 = 3 min) using 120 mg L-1 sand modified with 10 mg L-1 PAC an...
